My Story – Yoga for the Face or Face-lift Through Exercise
There I was, 52 years old and a lifelong meditator. I took a good look in the mirror. Much to my dismay – gravity was indeed at work!
Since the age of 19, I had eaten organic foods, taken supplements, given birth naturally with my son, and practiced yoga at least three times a week. I even meditated regularly. Yet when I looked in the mirror in my early 50s, I saw deep wrinkles on my forehead, crow’s feet that testified to a lot of laughter in my life (at least I could recognize that part! ), drooping jowls, wrinkles around my lips and rings around my neck. Help! It seemed like vanity was alive and well and thriving in me!
I admit: I found myself on a quest to “correct” (what a beautiful word) the ravages of time showing up in the form of wrinkles and puffiness on my face and neck.
Surgery was not a consideration for me – no, no! At 65, my mother-in-law looked constantly surprised by too many facelifts. Besides, I’m organic. What to do? I was looking for a younger look – sort of, sort of – naturally!
First I bought the electronic gadgets. I found myself holding this contraption to my face for an hour a day – receiving little electric jolts to my facial muscles. Well, I lasted five days. I understand that staying so long with such a device was something of a record. No way am I spending so much time doing this. Besides, my arms also got tired from holding this thing against my face. Then (yes I shamed myself!) I bought the electronic mask! It was a 45 minute a day diet. Forget. I found out that I wouldn’t spend my time doing that either. In addition, the results were really not there. I looked as “baggy” and tired as ever. Sigh…
There had to be another alternative to isometry and electric shocks! I then discovered facial exercises. Yes! Long story short, I ended up buying all 12 programs that were on the market at the time. I discovered, to my dismay, that these programs were either too long, too short, incomplete, “incompetent”, or they also took 40 minutes a day. However, some of these exercises were showing results on my face.
I discovered that the old belief that touching or rubbing your face causes wrinkles was wrong. In fact, I had stumbled upon resistance training for the face. It made sense to me. After all, everyone knows that by exercising in a gym or doing yoga, you can tighten the body and skin. Of course, the same could be true for facial muscles and skin. I was about to find out for sure.
Since I was a teacher at heart (I taught school for years), I developed my own program and got amazing results. My wrinkles flattened out and then disappeared. My facial muscles have enlarged and created lift, giving me the look of youth. The papery skin under my eyes and on my neck smoothed out and became firm. The rings around my neck have completely disappeared. The lines around my mouth evaporated. I had found my lips young and fleshy. My upper eyelids were showing again. In short, my exercises were working. I found this young and dynamic look that I had when I was young!
The next thing I knew, all my girlfriends wanted to know what I was doing to look so good. I told them, and my workshops were born.
Alright, alright – I knew from experience that I wasn’t going to spend 40 minutes a day on this stuff, no matter how young it made me look. So I consulted with my longtime family doctor and together we developed a program that covered all 57 face and neck muscles in one 15 minute session.
I admit it. I have a bit of a perfectionist residing in me. It took me three years to perfect this workshop program. As I worked on the exercises, I discovered that I was tired of counting and trying to remember everything. So I made tapes and CDs that teach, punctuate and matter to me. Maybe I’m a lazy perfectionist? Sigh…
Then the problem arose of when to do these exercises. All the old programs I had tried before suggested doing five exercises in the morning before showering, five more at lunch, and ten more at bedtime. Egadi! Not only could I not remember the last exercise I did, but I even forgot to do them. I decided to solve this problem. After all, as strange as it may sound, I knew I had to do these exercises to get the results I wanted!
In the end, I devised 28 exercises that completely firm the face and neck, and packed them all into one 15-minute session. The session is also done lying down. (I’m lazy!!!) Now I set my alarm clock 15 minutes earlier than usual in the morning, turn on my CD and my voice guides me through the exercises. No more remembering what comes next; no longer counts. Everything is done for me. Plus, my face is almost “addicted” to the glorious massage and yoga antics it gets in the morning. What a beautiful and relaxing way to wake up. On top of all that, I did everything I needed to do to look younger and younger looking. I don’t need to think about it for the rest of the day!
As my program grew, I found that I needed to create flashcards for my workshops. Now I’ve even made picture cards of photos so my clients can easily see how each hold is done correctly. I have an easy-to-follow manual and lots of other beauty materials (I worked as a photographer and runway model when I was younger, so I have a good handle on the beauty world). Add to that my three CDs for easy learning, and you will understand “one day a teacher, always a teacher”. I know how people learn, so I had a big advantage, I could put together a great package to learn the exercises.
I found myself giving workshops regularly. Then my girlfriend from Hawaii called. She had read an article I had written and wanted to do my program, but couldn’t attend my workshop. My “self-study to-go kits” were born. This is a complete set with everything you need to learn the exercises on your own. It’s so amazing how existence seems to keep rewarding me when I do something I love.
Now I even have a DVD demonstrating all the exercises, which makes the program really easy to learn! My business is growing by leaps and bounds and I’m enjoying every minute of it.
Alright, I admit it. I am vain. My whole life dedicated to meditation and here I am exercising my face to look younger. So, I “look/meditate” on a face that looks younger too. Thank you life !
