A Debate on the Asian Educational Mentality

Americans like to think they are “#1” in everything, but what about our education system? According to statistics, the American education system needs to be reassessed and reshaped in several ways. Standardized test scores lag far behind Asian countries, and furthermore, our science and math levels are well below the average Asian scale. But what is really at stake here are not the educational reforms that need to be made, but that need to be seen from different angles. Western and Eastern philosophies tend to adopt extreme right or extreme left positions and common ground must be found.

While Westerners look to Asia in hopes of restructuring its educational framework, Easterners look to Western America. The process is running counter-active and parallel at the same time. How we achieve optimal literacy is a matter of debate, and the two perspectives couldn’t be more different in their approach. It can be a bit difficult to approach this topic without stereotyping East and West. However, the most obvious difference is the Eastern and Western philosophies. The Eastern implications of hard work, obligations and academic achievement are capitalized and strongly emphasized in Asian philosophies. That’s not to say that the Western mentality doesn’t emphasize it either, but it’s touched on much more lightly and less intensely. Anyone of Asian descent knows this either from personal experience or from someone who grew up with a strict schedule of studying, keeping grades and learning materials before it was taught in the classroom, and even after-school tutoring. Academics and extracurricular activities are extremely emphasized in Asian philosophy of education and they are simply not explored to that extent in Western countries.

On the other hand, Asia is also looking to the West as a role model in education. What is different here is not in emulating our educational models, but in incorporating a Western perspective on top of their strict educational paradigm and framework. Education in Asia can be too strict, pressured, stressful and too overwhelming in some cases. At the extreme, of course, any educational approach will not be as successful if it is too strict in all respects. Most Asian countries don’t try to find other ways to include creative, fun and less stressful ways to incorporate education into their children’s lives. Extreme parenting may still be prevalent in Eastern countries, but they are surely turning to Western philosophies to lighten the load on academics.

Perhaps educational changes can be experienced if we learn from both sides and adopt a mean, more regulated and less pursuit of education. Since American universities are the envy of all countries, it seems that we are doing something right, in our own way. What we need to reevaluate is what America lacks to make these Asian countries seem to excel – in science, in math, in determination, in dedication, etc. Anyone can develop and instill a strong work ethic and it is by combining Eastern and Western philosophies that we can both learn from and improve on each other.

America has also capitalized on accredited online education, something the Eastern worlds are far behind. Accredited online colleges provide students with an additional outlet to learn at their own pace, which is another example of why the rigor of Asian education systems doesn’t seem like the best approach to education.
