Tips on Writing Poetry: The Sestina

One of the harshest and most intimidating forms of poetry is that of the Sestina. Most poetry these days is written in free form, with no regard for structure and rules, but that’s part of the evolution of poetry. The Sestina, like the Sonnet or any other form uses such strict rules to divert the mind from some of the other aspects. If you focus enough on one point, the others fall into place.

Plus, it’s all the more impressive to produce a work of art from such strict guidelines. The Sestina is one of the most oppressive forms there is, not because of a meter or a verse or verses, but because of six simple words.

Here is the form. Choose six words, all-purpose words. Words that can be used as nouns, verbs, adjectives. A word that can be pluralized and used in the past and the future. These words will be used a lot, so keep them loose and nimble. If you choose something long and polysyllabic, it’s going to be difficult.

Your sestina is 39 lines, six stanzas of six lines and a seventh of three. Each line is composed of blank verse with meter varied between four and six beats. The end of these lines is marked by one of your six words. Word order is also vitally important. Here is a sextina written by Rudyard Kipling, one of Sestina’s best known (and best written I might add):

In general, I have tried them all

The ‘appy roads that take you around the world.

In general, I found them good

For those who cannot use a bed for too long,

But must get ‘ence, the same as I did,

And go watch things until they die.

No matter where or how we die,

As long as we have our ‘health to watch everything

The different ways in which different things are done,

Men and women who love each other in this world;

Taking our chances as they come

And when they’re not, they pretend they’re good?

Cash or credit is not good;

You must ‘have the ‘abit or you will die,

Unless you only lived your life for one day,

Neither prophesying nor worrying at all,

But lured your tucker somewhere in the world,

And I never cared what you might have done.

But, Gawd, what are the things that I haven’t done?

I shot my ‘and to most, a’ well shot,

In various situations around the world

For he who does not work must surely die;

But that’s no reason why man should work everything

‘Is life on the same shift not so long.

Therefore, from one job to another, I evolved.

Paying couldn’t age me when my time was up,

Because something in my head has changed everything,

Until I gave up everything that was for good

And, at sea, before the lights of the quay die,

And I met my friend the wind that sweeps the world!

It’s like a book, I think, this flowery world,

That you can read and maintain for so long,

But right now you feel like you’re gonna die

Unless you get the page you read,

And another probably not so good;

But what you seek is to transform them all.

Gawd bless this world! whatever she did

Excep’ When terribly long I found it good.

So write, before you die, “‘E liked everything!”

Kipling’s six words are “everything, world, well, do, well, die”. You’ll notice that these are short, simple words that won’t necessarily seem overwhelming to the reader, so the fact that they’ve read each word seven times across the 39 lines isn’t immediately apparent. In the first stanza, he uses the words in the aforementioned order. In the second stanza, you first use the word six, then the word one, five, two, four, and three.

By using the previous stanza for each new stanza, you follow the pattern above. It’s like a math problem with a repeating formula. The key to the Sestina, however, is not in the formula. If you can’t write the formula, why bother writing it at all. No, the key is to make it as natural as possible without giving up the shape.

I found that writing some kind of story makes things easier. It also calls for the reuse of certain words. Likewise, when you write, use simple language. Do not look flowery and poetic. Tell a simple story with simple words and make it interesting. Also, don’t use every word the same way every time. You see Kipling using sometimes instead of long or all instead of all. This gives the impression that a different word is being used even though it is not.

If you manage to get through the first six stanzas, you are presented with the seventh and the task of using all six words, this time in any order you desire in three lines. And often it’s a sort of conclusion, like an essay, summarizing the story of your poem. But, don’t let it be just summary. Keep it consistent with your tone and progression. If you start repeating yourself in this form, you have failed the form and abandoned your readers.
