6 Useful Tips to Be a Great Teacher!
Being a teacher can sometimes be stressful, especially when you are training adults. Here are 6 fantastic tips to help you be more focused and organized.
Teaching tip number 1
When teaching a subject for the first time, try your lesson on your friends/family or partner. They will likely raise questions you hadn’t thought of before and you’ll find that it’s always a good idea to set up your answers in advance!
Teaching tip number 2
Arrange the classroom space so that all learners see and hear you correctly. Here are some ideas of different typical room layouts:
The layout of the theater:
Ideal for large groups in case you don’t have to interact with your audience.
Advantages: a large number of candidates can be accommodated in a single session
Cons: Not really friendly, doesn’t encourage any interaction.
The layout of Form U:
Advantages: interaction between students is encouraged and everyone will see the teacher
Disadvantages: the teacher’s desk can be seen as a barrier between the students and the teacher
The Cabaret layout:
Several round tables in class.
Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, ideal for cluster-based activities.
Disadvantages: Difficult for the teacher to observe all the activity in class. Difficult for some members of the category to visualize the teacher
Teaching tip number 3
Check your chronological order. Just like a good comedy, any good teaching session depends on a sensible temporal order. Check that your schedules are realistic and always try to have an extra activity in case you have free time.
You can check your time order by doing a trial run with a family member or friend (or even in front of the mirror if you can’t find a volunteer). This can be useful to adjust the timing of your session, but also to give you time to practice.
Teaching tip number 4
Proofread any document! Check for errors, grammar, linguistics and punctuation. Don’t just rely on your computer’s spell checking device, the machine won’t tell if you used the correct “their” or “there” and won’t be able to check for missing words either. If you are a tutor, you need to be credible in front of your students and a basic mistake will erode that.
Teaching tip number 5
When teaching, be sure to use reasonable goals.
What does that mean? It sounds terribly wordy, but it’s actually easy to understand. Objectives are statements that describe what your students will be ready to accomplish during the course/day/week.
The SMART method is generally used in project management to plan objectives, but it is also used by teachers:
S for specific
M for measurable
A for achievable
R for realistic
T for timed
Make sure the target is restricted. In other words, target your session to a specific learning outcome. Once your goal is clear, it will be easier for you to see clearly what the ability, technique, approach, etc. is. that your students will be ready to show during the session. Create it so it’s easy to understand, don’t use difficult terms and structure. Make sure what you’re trying and why you’re doing it is well understood.
Teaching tip number 6
Knowing your students’ first names will calm the atmosphere and show your respect for them as individuals.
Here’s a useful tip for capturing and learning your students’ names and getting the proper name on the tip of your tongue at all times: create a secret seating pattern map – when you start with a brand new class, write the names in the command that they sit. Usually people always take the same seat for each lesson. This gives you the opportunity during the teaching session to discreetly look at the note and therefore look in the right direction to mention “Are you okay, John?” and make sure you just look at John.
