## How to Score 700 on GMAT

700 is considered a magic number by many attempting the test. But let’s take a look at whether 700 is really necessary for admission to a top 20 business school.

Most business schools still report that the average admission GMAT score is below 700, but recently it has become increasingly common to see some of the top schools reporting equal or slightly higher scores. But these reports can be slightly misleading because a few very high or low scores can skew the average score. By contrast, median scores give you a clearer picture of your odds (although in most cases the median and mean are quite close).

You want to get the highest score possible, but remember that the GMAT score is only one part of your admission. Admissions committees will consider your experience, GPA, recommendations, admissions essay, and more when making their decision.

A score of 700 means you should score better than nearly 92% of other people taking the test, so that’s a stretch goal. Hard work and a good score on the quantitative and verbal sections will be required.

How long does it take to get a GMAT score of 700?

Reaching 650 (around 80th percentile) should take the average person around 50 hours of study, but if you’re a native English speaker and have a good aptitude for math, you might be able to get to that point with less. of studies. Raising your score another 50 points to 700 will likely take another two or three studies unless you decide to work with a professional GMAT tutor, in which case you can do less. A good GMAT tutor can help you become more efficient at problem solving.

The myth concerning the first questions of each section

The idea that how you answer the first ten questions in each section has a disproportionate effect on your score is simply not true.

This belief unfortunately leads many to spend more time than they otherwise would on the first ten questions. Of course, you must do your best for all questions, including the first ten, but your score will be determined more by the difficulty level of the questions you answer correctly than by the total number of questions answered correctly.

If you’re having trouble with these first ten questions, you might want to move on so you have time to answer the rest. Remember that if you leave a question unanswered, it will be considered incorrect with an additional penalty. So make sure you pace yourself well.

It’s unlikely that most people will answer the first ten questions correctly anyway. The exam adapts and each time you answer correctly it gets harder and harder (until you answer something wrong, in which case it gets a little easier again).

So don’t make the mistake of believing this myth and misallocating your time and effort. Do your best for each question, but don’t obsess over a particular set of questions.

Can I retake the GMAT as many times as needed to get a 700?

Most b-schools will consider your highest score when viewing your application. This allows them to report higher averages and averages for their rankings. They also tend to see the GMAT as a test indicating that you are ready to succeed in the program. If you get a good score, you have shown that you are ready. It doesn’t matter if you weren’t ready before, you’re ready now.

The GMAT score is just one part of your admission. The admissions committee will review your experience, GPA, recommendations, admissions essay, etc. They will be looking for motivation to succeed in whatever you are aiming for. A good GMAT score, of course, will also show that you have the determination to work hard to succeed.

More often than not, candidates perform better on subsequent exam attempts. They tend to be less nervous the next time because they know what to expect and what pitfalls to avoid.

It may be wise to plan from the outset to have to take the exam twice. Think of the first try as just practice so you get used to the pressure and time constraints you’ll face.

How do you get there?

The 700 level questions go beyond the basics. So, the CAT system will start asking you questions that are more about logic and subtle patterns. Things will no longer be obvious. You have to work to spot hidden equations, grammatical flaws, etc.

High scores are different from low scores in that they quickly determine how to approach each new question. They will see a similarity to a problem they have encountered in the past so they know what is probably the best approach to solving it. This ability to recognize such things almost immediately saves them time and avoids common pitfalls.

The 7 key success factors to obtain a score of 700

#1) Be consistent

Getting a good score is more often a matter of learning how to avoid careless mistakes rather than learning methods for solving some of the more esoteric problems you might encounter. Minimize simple errors and your score will really improve.

#2) Get good at the fundamentals

Having a good understanding of general grammar rules, for example, will help you a lot on the verbal part. If you have a good command of grammar, you can quickly read passages and understand the message conveyed.

#3) Score well on the verbal section of the GMAT:

Non-native English speakers often do well in the Quant section but not so well in the Verbal section, so their overall score is not as good as it could be. As a specialist GMAT tutor for non-native English speakers, I have worked successfully with many such students.

To successfully complete this section, it is important to be able to answer the questions within a reasonable time. Sentence correction questions should generally take less than a minute, critical reasoning should take between 45 seconds and 2.5 minutes depending on the difficulty of the question. This will ensure you have enough time for some of the longer full reads that could take up to ten minutes.

#4) Higher score in the Quant section:

Some candidates may be good on the Verbal section but not so strong on the Quant section. The difficulty of the questions you answer correctly is an important part of your score in this section, so to do well you must also answer the most difficult questions correctly.

Timing is also important in this section. On average, you should answer Data Sufficiency in just under 2 minutes and a little over 2 minutes for more difficult problem-solving questions.

A good way to practice is to use a journal to keep track of the types of questions you make mistakes on. That way you can study a bit more then find similar question types and try again maybe a week later and see if you’ve improved.

It’s best to use a tutor who specializes in the GMAT rather than a math or English teacher who is unfamiliar with the unique content you encounter on the GMAT.

#5) Time yourself when you practice

It doesn’t matter if you can answer a question correctly, but if you can answer it within the GMAT time limit. The math questions usually need to be covered in about two minutes, while for the verbal section things can vary.

Practicing with a timer can help you figure out where you might be going wrong. Practice as many times as needed to ensure you can successfully answer the questions within the recommended time frame

#6) Study smart

We’re not talking about anything too complex. In fact, you say that we strive to do the fundamentals well. That said, getting 700 on the GMAT isn’t straightforward and easy either.

#7) Improve your ability to recognize

The most important key to getting 700 on the GMAT is acquiring the ability to quickly recognize the type of problem your question involves and decide on the best method to answer it.
