Catch ‘Em Young: Should Entrepreneurship Be Taught in Schools?
Just a few days ago, I was reading a column by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas Friedman, in which he stresses the need to re-engage millions of American children, not just the brightest, to take an interest in innovation and entrepreneurship. This is to prepare a million new businesses that will not just give brief occupations of the pavement, but steady jobs that will keep America on the cutting edge. To do this, Friedman further offered a suggestion: make sure every American child knows about National Lab Day, offer the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship to every middle school and high school teacher, and bring each class to watch the documentary film “Ten9Eight”.
Although a little dated (first published in the NY Times in 2010), it resonated (for the most part) with me, especially in these times of the much-talked about demographic dividend, creation of jobs and start-up craze in India. Friedman was clearly referring to bringing young people into school, into the fold of entrepreneurship and being “ready for innovation” – meaning that in addition to their mortars, they are given the capabilities critical thinking, co-creation and multitasking and collaboration skills that will help them invent their own careers and in turn create more jobs.
Friedman’s perspective provides clues for dealing with India’s current labor history. By 2020, around 60% of India’s population of 1.3 billion will be in the working age group of 15-59. It is estimated that by 2025, India will have 25% of the global workforce.
India, it seems, can also do well to engage in teaching entrepreneurship in schools, to build bridges between today’s young minds and job seekers. of tomorrow. Various surveys have highlighted the need to teach entrepreneurship from the school level in order to create a competitive workforce beyond grades.
Experts say that unless we introduce entrepreneurship as a school subject – like math, history of science or geography – most young minds will long be unaware of an undeniable fact, namely that jobs are created more than they are consumed. According to Steve Mariotti, if entrepreneurship education can create jobs, encourage students to stay in school, and provide economic relief to people in low-income communities, why aren’t we teaching it in all schools.
Many believe that learning entrepreneurship – how to identify opportunities, how to circumvent problems, how to encourage innovation, how to overcome obstacles, how to form winning teams, how to place risk in context, how balancing a mix of innovation and tradition, how to develop social, emotional and professional skills – is best taught in the early years of education. Some of the leading experts are also of the view that teaching entrepreneurship at school level can be the long-term model for the most ambitious Make in India campaign.
Meanwhile, the government has also quickly realized that entrepreneurship is one of the answers to sustained economic growth and job creation. and XII by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Some schools in India have already taken a step forward by integrating the development of entrepreneurial and life skills into the formal school curriculum at the elementary level.
However, the path to introducing entrepreneurship in schools is paved with unique challenges. Considering the obstacles in the Indian education system, it is important to address concerns such as curriculum design, trained teachers, whether optional or compulsory, whether in-house or outsourced, among others.
Whether entrepreneurship should be taught in schools may remain a moot point for some time, but unless we develop a full ecosystem and entrepreneurial spirit from school to industry , we could remain a country of job seekers. Watching “Ten9Eight” in the meantime might not be a bad idea after all.
