The Path to a 2 Year Nursing Degree

Many people dream of becoming a nurse; However, not all of them pursue their dream because they think that getting their nursing license will take a long time. Luckily, you can earn an entry-level nursing degree in two years, with a 2-year nursing degree.

General prerequisites

2-year nursing degrees are also called associate degrees and they are primarily designed to provide students with the basics of nursing, including clinical knowledge and theory. In order to pursue an associate degree in nursing (ASN) or an associate degree in nursing (AND), you will need to have received your high school diploma or passed the GED.

Mathematics prerequisites

Some nursing schools will require you to complete college algebra and nursing math before you qualify for an associate degree program. At one time, nursing mathematics was incorporated into the degree program, but it is now more common for it to be required before entering the degree program. Nursing math differs from other math courses in that you will need to learn how to calculate IV flow rates, drug dosages, and other calculations that nurses routinely use. You may also be required to take statistics or other math courses depending on your school’s requirements. These classes generally require a grade of B or higher in order to be considered adequate for entry into 2-year nursing degrees.

Scientific prerequisites

Before attending nursing school, most students have taken a number of science courses. These general science courses are designed to provide students with the basics of the human body, its structure and processes. Additionally, science classes like chemistry focus on how substances react in certain situations. Some schools also require courses in organic chemistry and biochemistry. There is a combined course designed specifically for medical professionals which is generally an acceptable substitute.

Once you enter a 2-year nursing degree program, you will have to take courses in microbiology or bacteriology in which you will learn about microscopic organisms, disease-causing microbes, and how to destroy these microscopic invaders.

Clinical training

No matter where you graduate, you will need clinical experience before you can earn your associate degree in nursing. Individual states determine the number of hours you will need before you can apply for and obtain your nursing license. You will be expected to provide hands-on patient care in a clinical environment. This is a general term that encompasses hospitals, medical centers, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities and medical practices. You will also need to be supervised by a clinical instructor who will ensure that you have demonstrated the required clinical skills. Some of the skills you will need to master include inserting and removing a urinary catheter, changing dressings, and intramuscular injection. Knowledge of drug treatments will also be required and you will need to demonstrate that you can develop a nursing care plan for your patients.

After graduation

The associate degree in nursing is a common path for aspiring nursing students. You will find that the majority of technical and community colleges offer 2-year nursing degrees at an affordable cost. Once you graduate and pass the NCLEX nursing exam, you will be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) depending on the courses you have taken in your program.

There are many career opportunities for newly graduated nurses, who will find they are immediately employable due to the shortage of nurses in the country and due to the excellent preparation you receive in these programs. Often, nurses with an associate degree decide to further their education while pursuing their careers. An associate’s degree is a big step toward earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing, which typically takes four years.

Nursing is a rewarding career that is nearly recession proof, offers a good living wage and provides personal satisfaction. If you have a calling for this profession or are simply looking to make a career change for a more fulfilling one than what you are doing now, contact your local community college or technical school to get started on the path to earning a diploma today. 2 year old nurse.
