Should All Subjects Be Homeschooled Equally?

Homeschooled parents benefit from technology to enhance and complement traditional methods of teaching on the school campus. There are several educational software and teaching software packages that can help develop a curriculum. The Internet is a very useful medium that is full of educational resources; online dictionaries, libraries, encyclopedias and museums.

Depending on your state’s home schooling law, the following may apply:

1. School officials may inquire about parents’ qualifications to instruct or teach their child; however, the parent instructors do not necessarily need to have a particular diploma. A high school graduate or less may instruct the child, provided they have the ability and are of sound mind.

2. Elementary level children should learn the following: English, which includes reading, spelling and writing; mathematics, geography, science, civics, history, physiology and health, music, physical education and art.

3. Secondary level children should learn the following: English, which includes speech, language, literature and composition, science which will include chemistry and biology; social studies, geography, economics, US history, world history, mathematics which will include algebra, geometry, and statistics; music, art, physiology and health, physical education and safety.

4. School officials can inquire about the subjects the child should study, require the length of the homeschooling year, and allocate teaching hours for each subject.

While they can determine the teaching hours for each subject, they should not control the method of teaching these subjects.

This means that homeschooling parents can determine and evaluate instructional hours based on their homeschooling method, not necessarily so they can emulate public school, but rather match and adapt it to suit their needs. efficiency and systematic approach.

In homeschooling, it is up to the parent to determine the intellectual needs of the child. The subjects to be taught do not require specific teaching hours, although each subject needs an allotted time, so that the child fully assimilates what is taught.

Also, keeping to schedules is not an important factor in home schooling where the use and understanding of time is so different.

5. School officials may recognize and classify learning materials solely for the purpose of determining the subject and grade or level of the child. They should not use this right to demand the manner or style of teaching in which subjects should be taught.

When the child struggles in a certain subject, for example reading, the parent should schedule longer hours for reading, which gives the child enough time to learn that particular subject.

On the subject which the child learns and grasps willingly and easily, the parent can shorten the time spent on this subject and allocate the extra hours for the subjects which the child finds difficult to understand, to the subjects on which the child progresses wrong.

At homeschooling, children can take the time to learn and explore each subject at their own pace, according to their own abilities. And the parent can find creative ways to make learning and teaching fun.

A few effective and useful learning materials that are not tangible, such as community service, travel, visiting parks and museums, etc., will certainly provide important learning skills and knowledge in addition to those learned from books.

6. Parents and school officials must agree on a system of evaluation or assessment of the child; either standardized tests, periodic reports on the child’s progress or dated work samples.

Determine your child’s ability and learning style so that:

1. You will know which approach to use or be well equipped to teach them. It is a misconception that some parents have, to assume that their children learn like them. For example, when parents are visual learners, they also expect their children to be visual learners. Remember that children are different individuals; usually having distinct learning styles compared to their parents and even siblings. The sooner you learn and understand each child’s learning style, the sooner you can teach them effectively.

2. You will be ready to decide on a program for home schooling. If you are unfamiliar with your child’s learning styles, you may be selecting a program that may not be an effective tool for your child’s learning.

3. You can better identify and understand your child’s educational needs. When children fail to communicate effectively, they, like everyone else, get upset and discouraged. However, if you understand your child’s learning styles, you can help your child understand themselves better, allowing them to interact and correspond better with their peers.

Understanding their learning styles and abilities will help you determine how many hours they need for each subject; homeschooling does not require strict hours of teaching your child in any subject. It all depends on your child’s progress; if he can make his calculations in less time with regard to the study program assigned to him, so much the better. If you feel he needs to spend more time reading, then he should.
