## Astrological Choices – Equal and Unequal House Systems

I don’t know if you can say this or not, but I’m on a mission in this series of articles to provide basic explanations of the rudimentary principles of astrology. This is my fourth Astrological Choices article having already presented the tropical or sidereal system, the heliocentric or geocentric perspective, and the types of cartography available. For this article, we will be looking at the tropical system of equal and unequal houses. I am not a sidereal astrologer, so please rely on someone who is knowledgeable in the sidereal system for an explanation of the layout of the sidereal houses.

The outside of a typical astrology wheel shows the zodiac positions for a single date at a specific point in time at a specific longitude or latitude. If any of these four elements, date, time, location by longitude and latitude, are changed in any way, the positions of the zodiac around the wheel itself will change. Two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time, so exact duplication of charts is not possible unless a team of doctors does something amazing and that would present a conundrum to astrologers everywhere . The universe emphasizes individuality and this specificity of birth based on the four given elements helps to map the individuality offered by the universe. In our solar system, it takes just under 26,000 years for a pattern to repeat itself seemingly exactly. By then we will have advanced so far in the galactic rotation that no real remote duplication is possible. Individuality is the norm; only humanity works hard to develop conformity from individuality.

There are two general types of tropical house systems, equal and unequal. The system of equal houses divides the 360 degree circle into 12 equal compartments of 30 degrees each. I don’t know your experience of life but mine is that life is certainly not equal, just look around you at the variety of possibilities and the creeping inequality. While I can see the value in any house system (they could all serve a specific but possibly unknown purpose), I don’t practice the equal house method. One of the best personal readings I’ve ever received was from an overlay of equal and Placidus, I don’t discount the value of the equal system, but it’s my choice to read unequal.

It is important that you understand the difference between the Midheaven (Medium Coeli – MC) and the Zenith as well as the Immum Coeli (IC) and the Nadir, which are different in extent and application but are often confused with each other. with each other, in order to do this we will assume a specific Ascendant, let’s just say 29 Gemini. If I look straight above 29 Pisces, it is Zenith. If I look directly at my feet at 29 Virgo, it’s the Nadir, each at an exact 90 degrees from the Ascendant. The opposition to the Ascendant is the Descendant in all house systems, in this case 29th Sagittarius. All houses read 29 degrees starting with the Ascendant counter clockwise around the wheel in zodiac order. This is an equal house chart. You can choose to “float” the traditional mid-heaven if you know in the house it falls naturally or you can choose to ignore it. Personally, I can’t imagine life without Midheaven!

The Earth rotates on its axis as it orbits the Sun, a double movement that is in play every moment of every day. This orbital path is called the ecliptic (path on which eclipses occur) and it crosses the middle of the 12 zodiac constellations that we use in astronomy and astrology. The rotation of the Earth on its axis is not in a 90 degree relationship to its orbit, the Earth is instead inclined about 23 ½ degrees to the path of its orbit. This tilted rotation rotates the Earth in and out of this exact 90 degree relationship to the center of the zodiac, distorting how the zodiac is experienced here on Earth. The reality of the situation is the natural distortion which is reflected in the uneven distribution of space for the houses. The Midheaven may or may not be at a 90 degree angle to the Ascendant. Mine is almost a trine (120 degrees).

In the tropical tradition, the CI is the exact opposite of the MC including the sign, the degree and the minute. The Midheaven represents the highest point to which a planet can rise before beginning to descend toward the western horizon, called the setting. The IC represents the lowest point a planet can fall to before it begins to rise towards the eastern horizon or rise. This distortion produces an unusual and unique distribution of zodiac degrees around the chart wheel which is reflected in the unequal house systems. Technically next would be dividing this distortion by space or time, but that will have to wait for another article as it requires more space than I have. This article is only intended to help you understand equal and unequal houses.

The date, time and place are the three essential ingredients of a unique birth card. The date is easy, the place is given by longitude and latitude; time is defined by the time standard in play at the time and place of birth. The Ascendant is defined for the time of birth that intersects with a specific point of the zodiac on the ascending (left) side of the wheel, the rising sign. This point can be empty or occupied by a planet. The emptiness of a body has no particular meaning that I can determine; it essentially allows that point of the zodiac to operate as the “directing” or dominating energy in that person’s life. When I mention the degree of the zodiac as dominant, it is the “reigning” planet of that degree of the zodiac which assumes dominance. If there is a physical planetary body present in that degree, the zodiac degree rule and the planet in question “co-rules” or are dominant energies in that person’s life. Is there more than one planet in this ascending degree of the zodiac? Now the picture gets really interesting as the dominant qualities more or less compete for the lead dog position.

In my own wheel, the first house contains only 19 degrees, the second house only 20 degrees, the 3rd house only 24 degrees, or about 63 degrees for this first quadrant. That’s right. The closer you are to the equator, the more equal the houses. The farther you go from the north or south equator, the less equal the houses are. This variation is the source of house interceptions. Near the equator there is little or no opportunity for interception. As you move north or south of the equator for a birthplace, house distortion increases and the probability of interception also increases. When moving in the latitudes of northern Europe, the British Isles, the northern part of Eurasia, etc., multiple interceptions are possible. The same is true for the southern hemisphere although the population density decreases as one approaches Antarctica.

The closer you get to the most populated northern polar countries, the Midheaven and the Ascendant may overlap. This is one reason for house equality proponents to show the inadequacy of unequal houses. On the contrary, I believe it proves the validity of the unequal house system. As we travel north (or south) towards the polar regions, life becomes more difficult and hostile in nature. Since the Ascendant represents our physical selves and the Midheaven represents our goals in life, I think having them close to conjunction would result in personal survival as the goal of existence. This proximity of the Ascendant and Midheaven would crush the 11th and 12th houses in this physical survival mode.

Since all intercepted houses are paired by axis, the same situation would be true when the IC approaches the Descendant with the 5th and 6th houses crushed in this tight group. It is not my intention in this article to define intercepted houses, but it is important for your understanding of equal and unequal houses that intercepts occur naturally but alone in uneven maps.

Equal houses are easier to build. Uneven houses require math skills or a good computer program. Equal houses are more generic in quality but quite effective if you are doing quick reads such as a fundraiser, psychic fair, radio or television work. The pairing of equal to unequal as mentioned earlier was awesome reading for me. Each astrologer chooses what works best individually but this is not a judgment on a system, it is a personal preference. Each has a value, each has a place in your skill set, but you’ll choose one as your primary.
