Idiom Bulletin Board – Step by Step Instructions
This easy, fun and creative bulletin board makes you look like a pro while developing students’ vocabulary and language skills. This bulletin board works great in a classroom or hallway for the whole school. I wanted a way to involve my school in language development and used this idea. Follow these quick steps and you’ll be on your way!
4-5 simple idioms and definitions
Images to represent idioms and definitions
Decorate the bulletin board with butcher paper in a color of your choice as a background. Use contrasting borders that complement the color you have chosen.
Choose a theme for the idioms you will use. Some popular themes include:
Bees, horses, weather, dogs, fatigue.
Choose 4 idioms. Pay attention to the choice of idioms. Idioms for intermediate level students should be idioms that give a hint of meaning. An example of this is “it’s raining cats and dogs”. The word “rain” is a clue to the meaning. Early advanced language learners may work with idioms such as “you pull my leg” which gives the learner no clues as to the meaning. Choose the language level you want students to work with.
Collect 1 image per idiom that shows what the words say and another image that shows what the idiom means. Use your own class pictures for this or do a quick Google search for “idiom pictures”.
Type and print the idioms. Glue the typed idioms and pictures onto colored construction paper. Cut to size.
Place the 4 idiomatic images that display what the words “say” at regular intervals at the top of the bulletin board.
Place text below each image.
At the bottom of the bulletin board, place the picture of what the idioms “mean” in random order.
Staple a piece of yarn under each idiom’s text long enough to reach the image that shows the idiom’s true meaning. Tie a loop to the end of the piece of yarn so children can tie the yarn the right way.
Stick a thumbtack in the bulletin board above the random images that show the true meaning.
You now have an interactive bulletin board where students can match the idiom with the picture of its meaning by looping the wire to the thumbtack above the picture of the idiom’s true meaning! Watch your students have fun and learn the idioms!
