The Perfect Timing of Jesus’ Birth – The True Meaning of Romans 1.3
In verse 3 of Romans, Paul refers to Jesus and goes on to define Jesus’ physical genealogy.
“(Jesus) descended from David according to the flesh…”
There are two key points to note here, firstly that Paul believed Jesus was flesh, not an airy spirit, and secondly that he was able to trace his birthright back to David, and therefore to Abraham. The complete genealogy is given by Matthew in the first chapter of his book. The name of each member of each generation is linked. This list could have been challenged at any time by the Sanhedrin, but it was not because it was true. The Israelites kept “Books of Generations” in which this information was carefully recorded. (see Genesis 5.1)
Math is important. There are fourteen generations separating Abraham and David, fourteen separating David from the deportations to Babylon, and fourteen from the deportations to Babylon to Christ, as described in Matthew 1:17. So not only is there a direct natural connection to Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, but the number of generations shows that Jesus’ arrival was carefully timed, a meticulous identification in history.
That the sacking of Jerusalem occurs exactly halfway in generational terms between Abraham, the earthly father, and Jesus, the divine son, must have powerful spiritual connotations. It is an illustration of the refinement that goes into the unfolding of our destiny.
The conclusion is that no one else could have occupied this place, the 42nd generation since Abraham, as parentheses marking the history of the Israelites, with the plundering of Israel right in the middle. Since the Jews took their genealogies very seriously, we have no reason not to believe these facts. And 42 being a multiple of 7 is significant, since 7 is a significant number. After six days of creation, the seventh day was the day God finally rested. The first coming of Jesus was part of an intelligent design.
By mentioning this here, as part of the introduction to his letter to the Romans, Paul is keen to establish Jesus’ earthly credentials. Jesus of Nazareth wasn’t just another crazy prophet coming out of the desert. His birthright as a descendant of one of the most respected heroes, David, means he held a special place of honor.
