Ray Tracer Controls – Reflection and Refraction Concepts

The Raytracing Controls section is designed to give you access to almost all the features of the Raytracing card type. The main missing feature is the attenuation control. You have mitigation capabilities but no explicit controls like you do in the ray trace map. If you need that level of control, you’ll need to use the map for reflections or refractions. A closer look at some of the settings in the Ray Tracer Controls section is covered later.

As mentioned earlier, several other types of materials come with the 3D application. They are:

– Mixed

– Double sided

– Matte/Ombre

– Multi/Sub-Object

– Up down

The main difference between these materials and the Standard and Raytrace materials is that they require a Standard material, Raytrace material, or equivalent to function.

As you’ve started to see on your travels through the materials above, one of the 3D app’s most intriguing features is its ray tracing capabilities. Ray tracing adds a new level of realism not previously available in the base package. However, this realism comes at a price in both speed and build-up time for mastery, as recently experienced in the introductory sections.

You can literally spend weeks working with and tweaking ray tracing settings for a single scene. One of the most common difficulties for people new to ray tracing is the fundamental concept of how it works. Ray tracing is based largely on simple angular calculations.

There are, however, many fine-tuning variables associated with angular math that make learning to ray trace a bit daunting at first. To better understand what’s going on internally with the ray tracer, let’s first look at some basic foundation building concepts.
