## Why Should I Learn Math If I Am Going to Be a Professional Golfer After High School?

Currently, luckily, I live in a resort golf community and see some of the best golfers practice occasionally here in our valley. We have about 150 golf courses here, and people come from all over the world, including the PGA Tour. About six months ago I was talking to a math and physics teacher at Starbucks on El Paseo Drive in Palm Desert, and he said a lot of the kids in his class didn’t care much about school, and they had this crazy idea that they were going to be professional golfers.

Interestingly enough, there have been several professional golfers from our area, including one of the number one female golfers in the country right now, so it is indeed possible. However, like all kids who play Little League or youth basketball, they are unlikely to become professional players. Either way, plenty of kids here get jobs caddying or working in Pro Shops, while working on their own game of golf.

Okay, I was talking with this high school math teacher and reminded him that there’s a lot of math in golf actually. And if a caddy wants to get good tips, they need to know which club is best to play based on the yardage and power the player can put out. In fact, they must be able to do simple calculations in their heads, and they must be right all the time. Math is even important in putting, and while you might think that’s rather comical, it is indeed the truth.

For example, there was an interesting post recently on the MIT Technology Review Network’s Physics arXiv blog titled; “Mathematics Reveals a New Approach to the Perfect Putt – A mathematical analysis of golf ball trajectories along a flat gradient reveals a simple new strategy for judging the perfect putt” which was posted June 13, 2011 by the genius blogger MIT’s KFC (some people call it God, actually that’s my nickname for this blogger).

Knowing this technique, and this type of math to foreshadow the perfect putt can take some shots off your game, and if you play it right, could make you a beginner golfer. It just shows you that high school students who want to become professional golfers can’t necessarily take easy math classes. They should take the toughest math classes and learn all the math formulas they can, and get good if they want to putt perfectly. Indeed, I hope you will consider all of this and reflect.
