## Is an Accelerated Math Course Appropriate For Your Gifted and Talented Student?

Does your child’s accelerated math program for gifted and talented students look like what I’m about to describe?

Most schools have some form of ability grouping or tracking, usually two to four groups or levels per year. The more capable group can either go faster, go further, or do both.

**The current trend: **

For a variety of reasons, the most common tendency in accelerated math courses is to move these groups very quickly through the material at a level only slightly deeper than the regular group, usually ending two full years early by college. (i.e. 7th grade). Algebra 1).

This kind of acceleration, leading to college calculus in grade 11, might suit students in the top 0.1% in math, perhaps even a smaller group than that.

For most students in the gifted and talented group, they move through the material too fast and too young to master it, and as the level of abstraction increases rapidly in high school, somewhere around precalculus, they often “hit the wall”. In other words, sooner or later we accelerated our brilliant students into incompetence.

**What is Appropriate Enrichment for Gifted Students? **

The ideal enrichment for able students is to work more broadly and in greater depth, without necessarily skimming through topics faster. If you have a gifted third grader, he or she would benefit the most from enrichment in the same subject that regular kids struggle with, multiplication.

He or she could do more, make more difficult and complicated problems, more interesting applications, learn other algorithms (like the Indian style – if your child is really good, he or she will love this), expand the topic to exhibitors.. Rather than skim through the same easy things regular students do in three weeks and then move on to another topic.

**Go forward : **

Of course, a gifted class will also go faster. I would be very wary of accelerating beyond a year above grade level in most cases, and if there is a way to avoid this and still have your child in a good class, I will do it.
