1 Simple Trick to Reciting Your Basic Times Tables

Weird topic, huh? I bet you’re interested in knowing this quick trick to recite what’s on the basic multiplication tables chart, aren’t you? Well, read on. In elementary school we learned by repeating them over and over and well, you get the message, don’t you? Do you remember how our teachers tested us and gave us math homework? And when they shouted our names and waited for us to raise our little hands? There was always someone jumping at the chance to call out the answer even though sometimes it was the wrong answer. Sometimes our teachers made it fun by playing with us and it certainly worked, didn’t it? Still, if you were anything like me, then you probably didn’t find it very fun and probably forgot how to recite them off the top of your head by the time you got old enough to “no longer need to to know .”

Like many things we learn, we only remember it long enough to pass a test, then forget it as soon as it’s finished. If you were also like me, then you probably only knew your times tables 0, 1, 2, 5 and 10 and thought you knew something just because you could recite them quickly. But what happened to 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and at least 12?

Although you don’t need to know everything about math, you should know at least the basic multiplication chart. Unfortunately, it took me much older (and wiser) to understand this concept. Some of you may scoff and say, “You really don’t know your multiplication tables? and I would answer without shame (and I know I just did without shame): “I knew them but I couldn’t recite them quickly off the top of my head.” Chances are they’ll think back to that clever little remark and think, “Wait! Me neither!” And now?

For me, the best way to learn anything is to know the pattern and know “why” something is. I know it may take time and for others it may not be necessary. Just know that is the answer and let it go! Some might yell at you. But for me, understanding the “why” and understanding the patterns helped me keep things in mind long after a test simply because they made sense. Now, not everything is always going to make sense and you’re not always going to find an easy way to learn something, but if you can make your life easier, even if it’s the easiest thing, wouldn’t you want to ? I think your answer is “yes”.

Now why on earth would I decide to write an article on reciting the basic times tables? Let’s go. Admit it. You wish you could say 9X8 equals 72 without pausing, right? I know I did. (shh, it’s the little things). For some reason, when I was a kid, I found my 9 times tables so difficult. I don’t know why but I guess I was just incredibly bored. Although I have a bad habit of making things harder for myself, I actually figured out a way to make it fun and easy!

I remember teaching a young girl her times tables many years ago. At first, she was so bored to learn it as her teacher taught. Like many teachers, they teach you to learn by repetition. I told her there was an easier way to do it besides repetition and she could probably use that method mostly. All she had to do was see the pattern.

First, I made him write the numbers from 9 to 0 like this: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. Then I told him to write the numbers in front, but this time put the front numbers in front of the back numbers like this: 09, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90.

Can you see the pattern? The numbers repeat over and over again! Now, before we go any further, here’s what I’d like you to do. Look at the first set of numbers (9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0). Now close your eyes and place the front numbers in front of them. Focus on what you see and then, in a low voice, recite what you see in your head. Get comfortable with your whisper and visualize what you see. When you are comfortable enough, you should raise your voice just a taste and continue to recite them, while visualizing the numbers. Now write the numbers without looking. How did it go for you ?

Since you’re having so much fun, let’s go a little further, shall we? Write the numbers from 9 to 0, but this time repeat the sequence once you reach 0:

9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0

Now, as you did before, place the front numbers in front of the previous numbers. This time it gets a little tricky, but bear with me. Look at the pattern. You will see that after 90 you have to start over with 9 as the numbers increase. Think about it, if you start over at 1, nothing will change, will it? Yet it’s simple because you just continue the numbers as if you were counting normally. Check it out!

09, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90, 99, 108, 117, 126, 135, 144, 153, 162, 171, 180, 189, etc.

Notice, once you get to 0, the first two numbers are the same because the numbers increase, but the concept doesn’t change. Like I said, it gets a little tricky as the numbers go up, but stick to the pattern. Keep writing them. When you look at them, follow the sequence as you did when the numbers were just 0-9.

Keep in mind that this works for all times tables. You just have to look at the model. Once you do that, you will find that reciting them and knowing them will be as easy as 1, 2, 3! (no pun intended) Besides, teaching this method to your little ones will be as easy for them as it is for you, so share the good news!
