## Playing the Powerball – Tips For Picking Powerball Numbers

My eldest son is in high school and he is totally into math. The other day he was doing his homework, graphing functions and calculating outliers of a pool of numbers, when my friend from our lotto group called me and asked me what Powerball numbers I would probably choose this week. My son listened in on the conversation and after I hung up he gave me that teenage “oh boy” look if you know what I mean. Then he asked me if I really believed that by choosing random numbers I could win. He said to use statistics to define outliers and track them. I just looked at him and said “it’s none of your business, Mr. Smart”. Later that night I searched the web and couldn’t believe what I found.

When it comes to statistics, the name of Carl Friedrich Gauss is a German mathematician of the 1800s. He made significant contributions to the development in the fields of number theory and statistics. Carl Gauss is one of the most influential mathematicians in history.

He invented the Gaussian theory. Most people also know this as the bell curve. The mathematical function of his probability theory defies common thinking. Normally we ordinary people would choose the most drawn numbers because they appear the most often, or the less drawn numbers thinking that these haven’t appeared for a long time, I’ll choose them in case they are finally chosen . I mean even a broken clock is right twice a day.

That M. Gauss’s theory states that all numbers must first line up in a bell-curve type graph. In order to create a bell curve, we need to line up our historical winning numbers. What this research showed is that if I took for example all the winning numbers from the last 2 years, I would get a curve where 64 is the most drawn number and 1 and 45 are the least.

These guys from powerball strategies say that in the example above, the number 64 is the most selected, while on the edges, the numbers 1 and 45 are the least selected. The point is that now we need to get numbers not from the top or the sides, but we need to overlay a rectangular box in the middle where most combinations are reached. You see, they claim that the odds of having 64 and a 1 or a 45 are so small that it makes sense that numbers that appear quite often are more likely to be hit.

I will dig deeper into this and other articles, I think there may be something to it. I know you don’t really get rich by sheer luck, but maybe that logic takes away the “luck” and we’ll just have sheer victory!
