How Much Time Is Needed to Study for the Military ASVAB Exam?
If you are considering a military career in the United States Armed Forces, you will need to pass an entrance exam as part of your application process. This exam is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or ASVAB for short. In this article, I will help you find an ideal plan for how long you should study before taking the exam.
The ASVAB is designed to test you on the various subjects you learned throughout high school. Topics tested range from math and science to reading comprehension and vocabulary. There are also a few additional skills-specific topics that you may not be familiar with yet.
The time it takes to study for the ASVAB ultimately depends on the individual. Aspects to consider include your high school grades, how long ago you graduated, your ability to pass the tests, and how much material you still know or remember.
The best way to assess all of the above is to take a hands-on ASVAB exam under real test-like conditions. This means that you should take the exam in a quiet place, with a timer, and limiting all distractions. More importantly, you cannot use your calculator for the math sections.
Once you have your baseline scores, you can determine how much you already know, how prepared you are, and how much preparation is needed. For some students, especially studious types who have just graduated and are good candidates, you may only need a week to refresh yourself. More common however is the average student who has probably forgotten all the information and will need proper study and revision before taking the exam.
No matter where you fall between the two extremes, you need to keep your goals realistic. Extremely studious types tend to fear missing a single question and will be afraid to take the exam until they know everything. This results in months of delays and postponements of applications.
Keep your goals realistic. Remember that you don’t have to get 100% on the exam. Your AFQT requirement, depending on your branch, can range from 30 to 50 out of a possible 99.
Give yourself a few weeks to a few months maximum. Create a strict and consistent study schedule and stick to it. As an ASVAB tutor, I have seen many students go from failing the pretest to qualifying scores in a matter of weeks of dedication and continued study.
