Math in America Needs a Boost

Many university professors do not speak English

When I was in college, I had a teacher who barely knew how to say hello in English. It was a trigonometry class and math had always been my hardest subject. Long story short, I dropped out of that math class after failing the first exam. Even after going to the math lab, I couldn’t understand what the teacher was saying.

I was a little upset, but soon forgot. I took the same class from an English-speaking teacher and got an A. Actually, it wasn’t that hard. A few years later, I got my baccalaureate.

The problem persists for many years without change

Many years have passed. I had pretty much forgotten the pain of that class from so many years ago. However, something renewed the pain I felt. I was at dinner with my family. I was talking to the waitress about her schooling and asked her how it was. She was going to the same university I graduated from. She said she was fine except for one class. I asked her if it was a math class and she said it was statistics. Then I remembered and asked him, “Does the teacher speak English?” She replied, “No. I can’t even tell what he’s talking about.”

So I did a little investigation. I started calling people older than me. Indeed, many seniors reported having the same problem in college. What I found more troubling was an upward trend. Professors hire research assistants based on their math skills. They attract talent by offering scholarships ($). In exchange, for the money, the assistants are invited to teach undergraduate courses.

Administrators and university professors agree on the problem, but encourage me to say that there is no point in changing

I spoke with the university and they told me not to hope to change things. I spoke to several math teachers who said they knew about the problem and something needed to be done, only no one wanted to be part of it. Why? No one wants to stand up and be persecuted for trying to change the broken system. A teacher said: “Here it is again. It’s a bad face, but what do you do?”

Well, what I do is spread the word. I can’t tell you how many students I personally know who changed their majors like business and psychology after taking a few math classes and failing. They were good students in high school; not lazy.
